For sale we have an incredible work of mechanical art made by Reuge. This stunning pocket watch from 1985 has a musical alarm function with an animation displayed on the beautiful three dimensional picturesque dial. At the strike of a pre-set hour, the music plays from the pocket watch and a theatrical animation on the dial is activated. In this scene: the music movement starts and then the lady actuates the fountain crank, water flows out through the fountain into the basin, the man on the horse raises and lowers his arm and the horse moves its head to drink from the fountain.
The officer/ hinged style case-back of the pocket watch also opens to support the timepiece, which enables it to be placed on a desk or table for convenience and visual enjoyment. The pocket watch is in very good overall condition in consideration of the period with some signs of use, notably on the movement back-plate, when opening the case-back. The timepiece comes as a complete full set from 1985 and also includes the Lyre (ancient stringed musical instrument) winding instrument/ tool for winding the musical mechanism via the movement back-plate.
The pocket watch is yellow gold plated with a beautiful coin-edge casing, 57mm in diameter and a weighs approximately 1.1kg. The movement is mechanical manual wind with 17 jewels and approximately 40 hours of power reserve. The central crown at the 12 o'clock position is to set the hour and minute hands and the crown at the 11 o'clock position is to set the alarm hour hand.
Charles Reuge was a Swiss watchmaking pioneer known for the manufacture of exceptional musical pocket watches and mechanical music boxes. Mr. Reuge founded the company in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland in 1865 and became famous for his miniature musical mechanisms, complex mechanical movements, high-quality craftsmanship and decorative cases. Today, Reuge SA is majority-owned (since 2023) by the well-known and highly respected Swiss independent watch brand, De Bethune. Reuge SA also previously collaborated with MB&F to create the MB&F X Reuge MusicMachine 1 (later the MusicMachine 1 Reloaded), combining both music-movement expertise and creative design.
