OMEGA Petrograd Russian Market Export St. Petersburg USSR WWI Tonneau Small Seconds Hinged Classic Art Deco Vintage Rose Pink Gold 42mm Manual

For sale we have a rare and exceptional example of a vintage Omega 'Petrograd', which was a model manufactured by Omega for export to the Russian market between 1914 - 1924. Petrograd refers to the city of St. Petersburg, which was a major cultural and commercial center of the Russian Empire and early Soviet Union (USSR) period. Wristwatches were becoming more mainstream during and after WWI, especially for civilian and military use. Export markets like Russia, enabled Omega to expand internationally before the 1917 Revolution.

Omega manufactured tonneau-shaped wristwatches (barrel-shaped cases) in the 1910's and 20's, as timepieces were evolving from pocket watches to wristwatches for men. This beautiful example was considered large for the time, crafted in 14k pink gold with wire lugs and a small seconds complication. Later, in the early 2000's Omega would pay tribute to this model by releasing a reissue as part of their Museum Collection, known as the Petrograd 1915.

The watch is in good overall condition in consideration of the age and period, with notable signs of use on the dial and some oxidation on the 14k pink gold case. The dial and movement are both stamped Omega and the movement has its unique serial number engraved. At the back of the hinged/ officer case-back, three hallmarks are stamped, denoting the provenance of this historical timepiece.

Includes: a Hirsch black leather strap and yellow gold plated buckle with the letter 'W'.
